Normandy. 'Le mois de la photo'

04.03.2006

From 4 March to 5 April the festival ‘Le mois de la photo à Vire et en Bocage Normand’ takes place in the Normandian towns of Vire and Avarance. Two Estonian exhibitions are also present there — the retrospective ‘A man with two cameras’ of Johannes Pääsuke and the ‘The Flood’ of Peeter Maria Laurits.
‘A man with two cameras’ is an exhibition compiled by the Estonian National Museum and it gives an overview of the short life of the pioneer of the Estonian filmmaking and professional photographer Johannes Pääsuke. The exhibition shows that Pääsuke was not only a talented photo artist but also a sharp-eyed ethnographer.
‘The Flood’ responds to the first exhibition with a modern view. Its message is, typically of Laurits, both cosmic and ecologic — on the photos we see a world that has washed away the burden of civilisation and won the planet back to life.
The main aim of the ‘Le mois de la photo’ is to bring the art out of the big and prominent centres closer to people. In a similar, a retrospective of Man Ray was presented in co-operation with the Centre Pompidou during the last biennale, this year Hungarian and Portuguese best photographers are brought to Normandy in addition to the Estonians.
