Tallinn. Estonian Institute remembers its founder

14.03.2006

We bow our head in memory of the founder of the Estonian Institute, President Lennart Meri.
Foreseeing world events with his extraordinary perception in foreign policy, Lennart Meri founded the first institution of the emerging Republic of Estonia, the Estonian Institute, already in the late 1980s. Many members of the Institute that became a shadow foreign ministry received from him the best possible schooling in diplomacy available at the time. In 1992 when Estonia was restoring its foreign relations it could rely on people who had been initiated into diplomacy at the Institute’s representations abroad.
Lennart Meri showed that it was possible, indeed imperative, to speak about Estonia with eyes sparkling, and that there was no such things as 'small Estonia', because the country and its people can be just as big as they wish to be.
To work with the visionary Lennart Meri was a great honour for the colleagues who continue presenting and introducing Estonia via its culture - always a priority with the President.
