Budapest. Estonian ABC-books

20.03.2006

An exhibition about Estonian ABC-books is open at the University of Budapest from 20 to 31 March.
The exhibition in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Budapest (ELTE, Puskin u. 3.) gives a brief overview of more than 400 years of Estonian ABC-books. The exhibition was organised by the Estonian Institute and compiled by Krista Krumbeg, Helle Remmelt and Tiina Ritson. ‘Estonian ABC-books’ was designed by Lennart Mänd.
The exhibition excludes the very first ABC-books, which have not survived. The bulk of the material thus begins with the 19th century and reaches up to the present days, depicting also the children’s TV series ‘Teddy and the ABC-book’ (‘Mõmmi ja Aabits’) — the favourite of several generations of Estonian children.
The University of Budapest is the second location in Hungary where the ‘Estonian ABC-books’ is presented — in the first half of the March the exhibition was displayed at the Budapest Library of Foreign Literature.
